« Usines 3D » (« Virtual Factory  ») is a research program whose goal is to better document the history of industrial work.
This history study is based on the constitution of a documentary "corpus" assembling on specific industrial sites and from scattered archives, series of heterogeneous historical sources (texts, pictures, plans, archeological traces, etc.).

3D models of a few outstanding factories and workshops are built in virtual reality through the systematic computer processing of those collections of documents. It is an investigation tool to reveal new information about working procedures.

The « Virtual Factory » website is produced by the Laboratory of Economic, Social and Technology History of the Evry University in France (IDHES-Evry UMR- 8533)
with the support of the French National Research Agency (ANR 2007-034)

It is produced in partnership with the National Center for Digitization of Visual Sources (CN2SV of CRHST-CNRS) and with ArchéoVision (University of Bordeaux 3 - CNRS) which are two digital humanities resource centers working with the TGE ADONIS (very large equipment).

The structure of the Web site

The « Virtual Factory » website is the historical and heritage display case of our work in progress.
It is intended for all persons and institutions interested in the history of industrial practices.
The site presents a few interactive 3D models and short video films on the one side (V tab).
On the other side, it gives details on the archives, describes the methodology and tools used to achieve them.(tabs I to IV).

The « Virtual Factory » website is also a research platform for the teams of historians who study an industrial complex and work on its modelization (tab VI).
